Where Eagles Dare …

The Paro International Airport in Paro, Bhutan is one of the most beautiful airports in the world. It is also considered one of the most challenging airports in the world for take-off and landing. Text and photos by Kaushik Naik.

The Paro airport is a tiny one located in the foothills of the tall Himalayan ranges. As the pilot took us in for the landing, I was awe-struck by the clear and breath-taking view of the snow covered Himalayas. And as I looked down, it also dawned on me that this is one difficult airport to land an aircraft in!

The airport is located just a few kilometres away from the market area on the banks of the river Paro which flows alongside the airport. The layout of the airport is well thought out and the Paro Dzong can be spotted as soon as you get off the aircraft.

The airport is considered as one of the most dangerous airports, and only a hand-full of pilots in the world are qualified to land at the Paro Airport in Bhutan. Check out this BBC video on a pilot’s perspective of the Paro landing and take-off.
