Asparagus in Sangla

Prakash Residency in Sangla is worth visiting for its agricultural initiatives, greenhouse, orchards, and vegetable garden

Asparagus. Yep, that slender, green, and succulent vegetable that melts in your mouth after the first crunch. Asparagus. Asparagus never came to mind all the summers I spent in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. And yet, here I was in Sangla, looking at not just Asparagus, but Chives, and Strawberries, and Parsley.

We stayed in Prakash Hotel, right next door to Prakash Residency Hotel in Sangla. Both hotels are owned and run by Prakash Negi and his family. Prakash tells us that his father is one of the pioneers in trying out new crops and plantations in the region. Like most farming families in Kinnaur, Prakash’s family is in the Apple business. And they have orchards and orchards and orchards of apples, up and down Sangla valley. But they also have Walnut trees, and Cherry, and they plant Cabbage, Chives, Parsley, Asparagus, Strawberries among many other herbs and vegetables. Of course when we visited in March, the trees and plants were still in winter. But come June and July, I imagine the landscape will be all green, pink, and light green, and red, and yellow, and blooming.
