The Dolomites at Dhankhar

I had spotted the Palaezoic Formations around Dhankhar a little while before we reached the village. So I was expecting to see a bit more. But it was a great surprise (and delight of course) to discover a whole series of Dolomites right next to and around the monastery. There is a swath of Shale formations on the mountainside across the Monastery on the other side of the Spiti as well.

All of these mountains were likely under water at some point in time…
