The ShaikhSpear Himachal Diary 2016: Cooking on the Chulha

Mela Ram Uncle is preparing Rajma for dinner. His younger son Girdhari and daughter-in-law Asha are coming here to help with some work in the fields. And they love Rajma. 

I have seen Uncle and other family members cook in a traditional chulha everytime I came here or to Dandi Bagh. However, this time round, when I entered the kitchen, I saw that they were using a gas stove. Well, it’s good in a lot of ways but I was feeling a little disappointed that I wouldn’t be able to see Chulha cooking again. 

So one might understand my pleasure when Uncle started lighting the Chulha because the Rajma cooks much better on the variable flame of the Chulha.

 And so I sat down, watching Uncle light the Chulha, run through the regular motions and then put the pressure cooker on. 

Dinner is going to be great tonight.
