The ShaikhSpear Himachal Diary 2016: Respecting Village Elders

Depda, Himachal Pradesh, India, 9 September 2016, 12:30 pm:

Just as we were thinking about turning back and take the grazing cows back home, we saw an elderly couple come with their own cows. Aunty touched the elder gentleman’s feet as he is her maternal Uncle from Depda. After exchanging a few more pleasantries, the couple continued on their way home.

I have observed this custom here ever since I came in. All the younger ones touch the elders feet no matter where you meet them – at the well, on the road, in the village, anywhere and everywhere. It’s done all over the country but what I found different is that it’s done more frequently than elsewhere. Old traditions.
