The Mountain Walker Diaries: Shooting Rocks!

Near Sumdo, Himachal Pradesh, India, 17 January 2017, 2207 hours:

We just cleared huge rocks that had fallen on the road due to sliding from the mountain above. All of us quickly picked up, rolled, amd shoved the rocks so that the Xylo could go through. In 2 minutes we were off that section and into the car. That was easily the scariest 2 minutes of my life these past few years. The mountain up on the left side seemed to be frozen mid-slide. My ears were straining to hear any sound of any further sliding while I rolled the jagged rocks, some of which were around 5-7 kilos. We all knew that if a slide happened it would sweep us off into the Spiti below or crush us.
Imagine what it means to live in these parts … hardship and risk have a completely new dimension here in Upper Kinnaur and Lahaul & Spiti.

And am loving it (I think).
