The Wayfarer Diaries: The Village Khurik

22-01-2017, 1420 hours, Khurik, Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, India:

While wandering around the village Khurik, I reached a place where all the village cows and yaks were left to freely roam in the snow. My first thought was maybe they have been left loose to eat some grass that might be hidden underneath the snow. But on careful examination, I found that they were actually licking the snow. Which upon asking a local as he went past me, I was told that they were actually drinking water or more like licking the snow to get water. Getting water in winters is hard as we all know it by now, the major reason being that all the open water freezes (such as small streams) and only specific places have under ground spring water sources, from which people can drink water, all the year round.
