The Wayfarer Diaries: The Bus to Gorakhpur

2330 hours, 09-02-2018, Noida, India:

After waiting for three hours for the bus at Mahipalpur, my friend and I were finally informed that the pick up point had been relocated to Mahamaya Flyover. Being located in Noida on the other end of Delhi, it took us about an hour and a half to reach the new pick up point. This experience wasn’t a surprise as I had witnessed a similar incident in Pune, when another friend and I had to take a cab at the last minute as the pick up point for our bus from Pune to Goa had been changed due to some fabricated reasons. What was even more disappointing today was that the bus hadn’t even reached the pick up point and it took another half an hour before we could get on it.

While the two of us lie in the small enclosure on a rack (supposedly a bed), with one ruck sack as a pillow and the other under the feet, we can now get a feeling of how the luggage must be rolling all over the luggage rack as the bus swirls and twirls around the road.

Gorakhpur is around 780 km from Delhi and the driver claims that we will reach there in the next twelve hours or so. On our way, we will be crossing Agra and Lucknow, along with Faizabad and Basti towards the end of our journey. From Gorakhpur, we will be joined by our third friend and will continue with our journey ahead to Pokhara tomorrow itself.
