The Wayfarer Diaries: Heading to Nankhari

23-12-2018, 1450 hours, Kufri, Himachal Pradesh, India:

We left from Shimla around 1300 hours heading towards Nankhari for a festival which is being held after many years. Though I don’t know much about the festival except that it’s called ‘Shaand’ and is held in a random order in numerous villages around Himachal after a certain period of time especially eastern Himachal.

Joining in on this trip are my two school friends and also the newest member of The Mountain Walker team, Sanjay Mehta.

We have now reached Kufri and the sudden dip in temperature forces us to close our windows as I try to catch a glimpse of the mountains slightly visible but obscured by dust and mist. While many tourists have come to enjoy of what remains of the last snowfall accumulated near the highway. Many can be seen enjoying Maggie and hot tea or just rubbing their hands to get them warm again after playing in the snow for sometime.

Caution!! Thin layer of ice on the road can make driving really tricky; Photo: Abhinav Kaushal
