The Significance of a Confluence

Himalayan Photo Essay

I have travelled the length and breadth of India in the past two decades, and the one common factor that one sees across states is the presence of a life-giving River.

But what is a river? It is a living entity, like a family, a community. And like a family or a community, a river is built by other rivers flowing into it.
Like the Lingti and Parchu are two rivers that are tributaries flowing into the Spiti river. The Spiti in turn joins the Sutlej, and so on.

What I find fascinating is the Sangam or the Confluence, the point where two rivers meet. In Indian culture, rivers have great importance as do the confluence of rivers.

Today’s post is a look at the confluence of a few major rivers in the Himalayas.
