The Wayfarer Diaries: First Snowfall of the Season in Shimla!

22:22 hours, 13-12-2019, Boileauganj, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India:

The past month has been cold, just cold. We had some respite today with the sun out and smiling … but that lasted only till 4 pm, when the entire sky was rapidly covered by dark clouds, and shortly thereafter, it started snowing. The season’s first snowfall! Hordes of tourists walked around the Mall Road inspite of the fierce cold winds that were ricochetting off one’s skin exposed to the elements. But the smiling faces and cheerful voices said it all: Their wish to see, feel and experience fresh snow showering from the sky had come true!

After sunset, the snowfall picked up speed and now there is about approximately 5-6 inches of snow at Sanjauli and the Mall Road. Enough snow has accumulated on the highway, a mere 5-6 kms from the city near Sankat Mochan, effectively bringing the traffic to a halt as of now. Looking at the size and speed of the snow flakes falling on the ground it seems that by tomorrow (if the snow continues like this for the next six hours or so) roughly a feet of snow will easily accumulate on the ground. Which in turn points to the possibility of the road to Kufri and Narkanda remaining blocked tomorrow as well.

It is important to mention that Shimla has witnessed such a snowfall before mid-December after many years. And that too without any rains for more than a month now. With global weather patterns changing all over the world, it’s hard to say what’s going on. Though I guess we will sure find out with time.

For now, I guess it’s time to fill up my hot water bottle and get to bed. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.
